Smart thermostats are the cheapest HVAC upgrade with measurable energy savings — typically 8–12% reduction on heating and cooling bills, payback in 18–30 months for most LA homes. We install and service the three major residential brands: Google Nest Learning Thermostat (4th gen), Ecobee SmartThermostat Premium, and Honeywell T9/T10 Pro. Most installations are 1-2 hour residential service calls. We also handle smart thermostat repair when WiFi connectivity fails or HVAC integration breaks. LADWP offers a smart thermostat rebate for ENERGY STAR-certified models — typically $50–$75/unit, helps offset installation cost.

- Installation: 45–75 minutes typical
Installation cost
- Thermostat included + standard installation: $385–$685 depending on brand and complexity
- Includes wiring assessment, C-wire installation if needed (older homes often lack C-wire), thermostat configuration, WiFi setup, testing
- LADWP smart thermostat rebate: $50–$75 (homeowner files with proof of installation)
- Net out-of-pocket: $310–$610
When you need a C-wire (and what it costs)
Most pre-2010 LA homes don’t have a C-wire (common wire) at the thermostat — older HVAC systems didn’t need one, but modern smart thermostats do for continuous power. Three options when no C-wire exists:
- Run new C-wire from furnace/air handler: $145–$285 additional, clean professional installation
- Use C-wire adapter (Nest Power Connector, Ecobee Power Extender Kit): $30–$60 additional, simpler but adds box at air handler
- Use 24V transformer add-on: $80–$120 additional, plug-in solution
We discuss all three options during installation and recommend Option 1 for long-term reliability when wiring path is accessible.
Smart thermostat repair
Common smart thermostat problems:
WiFi connectivity failures
- Symptom: thermostat works but no app control, status shows "offline"
- Causes: router replaced, network changed, firmware issue, weak signal
- Fix: factory reset + reconfigure: $185–$285
- Prevention: place WiFi router within 30 feet line-of-sight of thermostat
Display fault / no display
- Symptom: thermostat blank, partial display, frozen
- Causes: power issue (often C-wire), firmware corruption
- Fix: power inspection + firmware reflash or replacement: $185–$485
HVAC integration failures
- Symptom: thermostat shows correct temp but heat/cool doesn’t activate
- Causes: relay failure inside thermostat, wiring issue, HVAC control board fault
- Fix: diagnostic to isolate cause: $185–$385 (replacement may be needed)
Battery issues (older models)
- Symptom: low battery warning, intermittent operation
- Causes: AA batteries running low (some older models still use these)
- Fix: $5 fix at home, but worth upgrading to C-wire-powered model
Schedule/automation breaks
- Symptom: thermostat ignores schedule, runs constantly
- Causes: software bug, settings reset, account issue
- Fix: configuration review + factory reset: $185–$245
Replacement when repair doesn’t make sense
On a 5-year-old smart thermostat with a board failure, replacement makes more sense than repair. Smart thermostats are improving fast — a 5-year-old Nest is functionally inferior to current 4th gen models. We typically recommend replacement on smart thermostats 5+ years old with major component failure: $385–$685.
Compatibility check before purchase
Before recommending a specific brand, we check:
- HVAC system type (single-stage, two-stage, variable-speed, heat pump)
- Voltage (24V is standard residential — but verify)
- Existing wire colors (R, W, Y, G plus C-wire status)
- WiFi network strength at thermostat location
- Home automation ecosystem (Apple HomeKit / Google Home / Amazon Alexa)
We don’t sell mismatched equipment. If you have a high-end variable-speed Carrier Infinity system, you need an Infinity-compatible smart thermostat (often Carrier Cor or specific Honeywell models) — not a basic Nest that doesn’t know how to operate variable-speed equipment properly.
